Meredith Connie

Meredith Connie is newly returned from the United States, where she made her living as a teacher, performer and composer for nearly twenty years. Upon her return, she took up playing her newly made Caldersmith guitar, custom made for her at a scale of 630.

Meredith grew up on the far North Coast of NSW, amidst the vibrant colour of an incredibly rich natural world. It was a beautiful place but didn’t offer much in the way of classical guitar, which she pursued first by moving to Sydney at age Seventeen to the Conservatorium of Music, and then to the USA after winning a scholarship to study at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Dusan Bogdanovic and David Tanenbaum. While in the US she pursued a number of parallel interests: pedagogy (teaching is another passion and she is now an early childhood specialist); composition (Meredith became a represented composer at the Australian Music Centre in 2017 upon her return to Australia) and performance. In 2017 she released a new CD on Move Records Fairy Tales Monsters and Wild Animals, featuring her composition, In The Wild, combining poetry and guitar.

In one of her visits back to Australia to see family and friends, Meredith remembered a luthier from the Northern part of NSW, Graham Caldersmith, and tried one of his guitars at Gladesville Guitars. Falling in love, she purchased it the same day. After playing the guitar for years, she became more aware of how guitar size needs to be matched to hand and body size through her intensive study of pedagogy and becoming a specialist in teaching young children. Putting those same principles into action for herself, she decided to play a smaller scale guitar – and talked to Graham about having one made. This time it involved a trip to his magical workshop in Comboyne amongst the cicadas and lush rainforest. A memory that will always be treasured, along with her new guitar made in 2016 .
